Insta360 X5 - The Ultimate 360° Camera

Insta360 claims that the new Insta360 X5 transforms the potential of 360-degree cameras, building on the achievements of the X4 with notable advancements in image quality, low-light performance, and creative features. Here is my view on its capabilities and whether it meets the expectations.

Design & Durability

The X5 features a sleek, premium design that balances durability and reliability, making it a strong choice for creators on the move. Its user-replaceable lens adds to its everyday resilience, especially useful in fast-action environments and during travel, while also serving as a great tool for capturing content for social media. With waterproofing up to 49 feet (15 meters) without additional housing, it’s well-suited for underwater shooting. However, the new placement of the USB-C connector feels less intuitive and somewhat awkward compared to the previous design.

Image Quality & Sensor Performance

The X5 is equipped with dual 1/1.28-inch sensors designed to significantly improve image quality, especially in low-light conditions and high dynamic range scenarios. This sensor configuration is optimised to capture more light, resulting in sharper, more detailed footage across a variety of lighting environments, both during recording and in post-production.

I feel that the X5 is a much better upgrade compared to the X4 — so much so that I ended up returning the X4, but I'm happy to keep the X5. It’s not perfect, but the improvement in image quality, especially the reduced noise and grain in the footage, makes a big difference. Interestingly, the PureVideo footage actually looks better to me than the 8K mode. I'm not sure what kind of processing or "magic" is going on inside the camera, but I assume the new AI enhancements have something to do with this noticeable improvement.

Video Resolution & Frame Rates

The X5 offers flexible video options:

  • 8K at 30fps for ultra-high-definition shots.
  • 5.7K at 60fps for cinematic video.
  • 4K at 120fps for smooth slow-motion.

The FlowState stabilisation performs adequately, meeting basic expectations but not standing out. That said, the stabilization feels lacking—particularly during walking shots, where the camera picks up foot movement and introduces a noticeable vertical shift in the footage. Unless I’m doing something wrong in the filming or editing process, this falls below the standard expected in 2025. If the issue lies with the camera itself, it’s a significant drawback. On a more positive note, the addition of PureVideo and improved low-light capabilities offers better flexibility and greater room for fine-tuning during post-production.

AI Features & Creative Tools

Packed with AI-driven tools, the X5 makes filming easier, especially for creators of all levels:

  • Pure Video Mode improves footage in low-light settings by reducing noise.
  • Insta Frame allows you to capture both 360° and flat video simultaneously.
  • AI tracking automatically focuses on moving subjects, while the app helps with reframing and editing.

Battery Life & Charging

The X5 is equipped with an enhanced battery that delivers up to 185 minutes of continuous filming. It supports USB-C charging and offers fast-charging capabilities, allowing for convenient recharging while on the move. While I have not personally encountered any issues with battery life, I routinely carry a compact power bank for my iPhone, which can also be used to recharge the X5 if necessary.

Price

Priced at £519.99 from Wex Photo Video, the X5 is a premium investment. However, its advanced features and impressive versatility make it a worthwhile choice for anyone seeking an above-average, reliable 360 filming device.

Conclusion

The Insta360 X5 raises the bar for 360° camera technology, even though it operates within a niche market with few major competitors. When compared to its predecessor, the X4, the X5 brings several notable improvements, such as better low-light performance, more advanced AI-driven features, and video quality that, while not groundbreaking, is more than adequate for most applications. These enhancements result in a more refined and immersive shooting experience. The device feels durable and well-built, offering waterproofing up to 49 feet (15 meters) and a longer battery life, making it a reliable choice for outdoor enthusiasts, action filmmakers, and extreme sports creators working in tough environments. While the image stabilisation is effective, it’s not groundbreaking—it performs consistently across a variety of shooting scenarios.
