My 12-Month Experience with the Mac mini M2 Pro - 32GB / 2TB
For over a year now, my main desktop has been the Apple Mac mini (M2 Pro, 2023), configured with 32GB RAM and a 2TB SSD, paired with the Apple Studio Display. I switched from my beloved Apple iMac (27-inch, Intel), which I had used for years.
Looking back after 12 months, I can confidently say the Mac mini is extremely capable, but it’s also made me realize just how special the old 27-inch iMac really was.

Why I Switched
Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, leaving me with two main options: the smaller 24-inch iMac or a modular setup with the Mac mini or Mac Studio. I opted for the Mac mini M2 Pro because it offered plenty of power, upgradable memory at purchase, and allowed me to keep a larger external display.

First Impressions
The Mac mini is tiny — you almost forget it’s there. The aluminum body is elegant, runs cool and quiet, and blends seamlessly into my desk setup. The performance promised on paper has held up well over 12 months.
Paired with the Apple Studio Display, I get a sharp 5K screen and accurate colors. But even after a year, the setup doesn’t feel as seamless as the iMac. The all-in-one simplicity is gone — now there’s the mini, the display, cables, and extra peripherals.

Performance Over 12 Months
Over the past year, the Mac mini has handled everything I’ve thrown at it. Daily tasks, coding, multitasking, and media editing all run smoothly thanks to the Apple M2 Pro chip and 32GB of unified memory.
Even with multiple applications, dozens of browser tabs, and running virtual machines for development, the system remains fast and responsive. The 2TB SSD continues to offer plenty of space and very fast read/write speeds, making working with large files effortless.

What I Still Miss
After a year, I still miss the 27-inch iMac. It was a beautifully integrated machine — display, computer, speakers, and camera all in one. The Mac mini + Studio Display setup is more flexible, but it doesn’t feel as elegant or as simple. I really wonder what Apple was thinking when they removed the 27-inch iMac from their lineup.
Pros
- Compact and quiet
- Excellent performance over 12 months
- 32GB memory handles heavy multitasking
- Fast 2TB SSD
- Great connectivity with multiple ports
Cons
- Modular setup isn’t as elegant as the iMac
- Hardware upgrades impossible after purchase
- GPU is less powerful than higher-end workstations
- Lacks the simplicity and charm of the 27-inch iMac
Final Thoughts
After 12 months, the Mac mini M2 Pro with 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD has proven itself to be a very capable machine. It’s powerful, reliable, and quiet, and it has handled a year of demanding workflows without complaint.
That said, for anyone upgrading from a 27-inch iMac like me, the transition can feel a little underwhelming. The Studio Display is excellent, but the magic of a single, all-in-one machine is hard to replicate. Apple’s removal of the 27-inch iMac remains a mystery — a modern Apple Silicon version would have been perfect.
Until then, the Mac mini + Studio Display combo is the closest alternative — powerful, flexible, and compact — but still not quite the iMac experience
