Fuji X100V

65 Photo Productions

Fujifilm X100V Hands on Review

Is it the ideal travel companion or merely a typical compact camera?

As a professional photographer, I'm accustomed to carrying the heavy and high-performing Sony A9 for weddings, conferences and portrait work. However, for leisure, travel or casual photography, I find that my usual setup can be excessive in both weight and bulk. This leads me to the Fujifilm X100V, a compact camera that claims to offer outstanding image quality without the hassle of carrying heavy equipment. After using the X100V for a while, I am ready to share my thoughts on whether this small powerhouse truly lives up to its reputation as a suitable travel camera that delivers quality without compromise.

Compact and Lightweight

But is it good enough ?

When you're on the go, carrying heavy gear can quickly become a burden. Packing light is often more challenging than it seems, especially if you're accustomed to larger, heavier camera bodies and lenses. Weighing only 478g, the Fuji X100V offers a refreshing alternative compared to my usual setup. Its lightweight build, combined with a retro design that feels great in hand, makes it a joy to carry throughout the day without adding extra weight.

At a glance, one might think that a camera this small compromises on performance. However, the X100V achieves an impressive equilibrium, providing a highly portable design without skimping on important features. Whether it's stowed in a bag or hung around your neck, it remains discreet.

Image Quality

Decent, But Not Sony-Level

The Fujifilm X100V delivers acceptable image quality for a compact camera, thanks to its 26.1MP APS-C sensor that captures sharp, detailed photos with vibrant and natural colours. If you enjoy Fujifilm's distinct colour science, it shows in the camera's results, producing beautiful skin tones and lush landscapes that resemble classic film, especially when using its film simulations. I prefer capturing images in raw format. The 23mm f/2 lens enhances image quality by providing decent low-light performance in most situations, with smooth bokeh and decent sharpness throughout the frame, though optimal conditions are necessary. Overall, the X100V strikes an excellent balance of detail, dynamic range, and unique colour rendering, making it an exemplary choice in its category.

Another limitation is the fixed focal length of the X100V. For someone who’s accustomed to shooting with zoom lenses, this might feel restrictive. But, as a professional who shoots with primes, I find that this can enhance your thought process with composition, It’s a reminder that sometimes, constraints can be a catalyst for creativity.

Ultimately, while the X100V doesn't match the image quality of the full frame camera's, it still offers its own unique appeal. Whether it's the compact design or the ease of carrying it around, it’s a great tool for those who want a more intentional shooting experience

Creative Control

A Photographer’s Playground

As a professional, creative control is key. The X100V shines here, offering manual controls on the top of the camera for shutter speed and ISO with a tactile dial that give you the satisfying feel of working with a classic film camera, while still offering all the modern benefits of a digital system. This gives me the flexibility to shoot in shutter or aperture priority mode, depending on my needs. I love the nostalgic hands-on experience.

Film Simulations

Not Relevant by Every User

While the camera’s Film Simulations feature is a fun creative tool for many users, allowing you to replicate the look of classic film stocks like Velvia or Acros, it’s not something I rely on. I still prefer to shoot raw and make my adjustments in lightroom to maintain full creative control over the final image. Still, for those who want to quickly share stylish photos without the hassle of editing, these film simulations could be a big draw.

The Viewfinder

A Versatile Asset

A standout feature of the X100V is its hybrid viewfinder, which enables a seamless switch between an optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder. The optical viewfinder is perfect for street photography, allowing you to compose shots without being limited by the frame. On the other hand, the electronic viewfinder is best for precise exposure control or when shooting in challenging lighting conditions. This versatility of the hybrid viewfinder is uncommon in compact cameras and is a significant reason why the X100V excels in this aspect.

The LCD screen can be difficult to use in bright sunlight. Despite having brightness adjustments, it’s still hard to view clearly under harsh light, forcing you to rely on the viewfinder. While the electronic viewfinder (EVF) works well in these conditions, it’s a shame the LCD screen couldn't be brighter.

Autofocus

Quick, But Not Lightning-Fast

The autofocus system of the X100V is dependable and suitable for a variety of situations, but it does not match the impressive speed of Sony's full-frame cameras. It performs well with slower subjects, making it great for street photography or portraits. However, if your goal is to capture fast action or sports, the X100V may struggle to keep pace. While it is not the best choice for high-speed photography, it is worth noting that this camera is not primarily intended for that purpose. The X100V is sufficient for general travel or everyday use.

Weather Sealing

Not Perfect, But Manageable

For photographers who travel in unpredictable weather, the lack of weather sealing on the X100V might be a concern. However, Fujifilm offers a "Weather-Resistant Kit," which includes an adapter ring and protective filter to seal the lens. While not an ideal solution out of the box, this kit provides some peace of mind for shooting in rain or dusty environments. As for the overall build quality, the X100V feels solid and premium, with just the right amount of heft to make it feel like a well-crafted tool—without being too heavy for long days of shooting.

The Battery

A Minor Hiccup

Battery life is the one area where the X100V doesn’t quite impress. While it’s decent for a camera of this size, it won’t last through an entire day of heavy shooting like my Sony A9. Luckily, this is easily remedied by carrying a few extra batteries—something that’s often essential when traveling anyway.

Conclusion

Is the X100V the Ultimate Travel Camera?

The Fujifilm X100V certainly lives up to its reputation as one of the top compact cameras for travel photography. While it may not serve as a replacement for your primary camera in fast-paced situations or extensive video work, it shines in terms of portability and creative control. However, I believe the image quality could be improved for a camera released in 2020. It strikes the perfect balance between size and performance, making it an outstanding choice for any photographer seeking a lightweight and highly capable travel companion.

For street photography, scenic views, or capturing moments while traveling, the X100V offers good results. If you are a photographer who prioritises portability without compromising on performance or creativity, the X100V is an option.

That said, I’m looking ahead to the X100VI, which promises to take things even further. Stay tuned for my thoughts on that model soon!
