Apple Watch Ultra 3

65 Photo Productions

3 GPS + Cellular 49mm – Black/ Natural Titanium

Introduction

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 in Black Titanium represents Apple’s most ambitious smartwatch yet. Designed for people who want more than a typical wearable, it combines a rugged, premium design with powerful health tracking, long battery life, and advanced connectivity.

While the Ultra lineup has always focused on outdoor enthusiasts and athletes, the third generation refines the formula with improvements that make it feel like Apple’s most capable wearable so far. After using the black titanium model for three days, I ultimately decided to return it and replace it with the natural titanium version. In my opinion, the natural finish looks classier, more versatile, and may prove more resistant to visible scratches over time.

Design and Build Quality

One of the first things you notice about the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is its bold and durable design. The watch features a large 49-mm titanium case, similar to previous Ultra models. The black titanium finish gives it a stealthier and more modern look, which many people will appreciate. Titanium offers excellent strength while remaining relatively lightweight, making it suitable for demanding environments.

The watch also features a flat sapphire crystal display, which adds extra protection against scratches and impacts. Apple has kept the distinctive Action button on the side of the device, allowing users to quickly trigger specific functions such as starting a workout, marking a compass waypoint, or launching a custom shortcut.

The overall design feels rugged and purposeful, although the larger size may feel slightly bulky for people with smaller wrists. It’s also a shame the thickness of the watch could not be reduced.

After a few days of ownership, I began to reconsider the black finish. While it looks striking, darker coatings can sometimes make small scratches or marks more visible over time. Because of this, I returned the black model and opted for the natural titanium version, which in my opinion looks more refined and timeless. Natural titanium also tends to hide minor scratches better since there is no dark coating that can reveal lighter metal underneath.

Another advantage of the natural finish is versatility. Compared with the darker black model, the natural titanium colour feels more understated and downplayed, making it more appropriate for formal occasions or professional environments. It also blends more easily with a wider variety of straps, whereas the black case tends to work best with darker or sport-oriented bands.

Watch Straps

One area where I feel Apple could improve is its overall approach to watch straps. While the quality of the materials is generally good, the designs themselves feel quite conservative and somewhat uninspired. The available bands tend to focus heavily on function rather than style, which suits athletes but may leave some users wanting something a bit more distinctive.

Compared with traditional watch brands that treat straps as part of the overall aesthetic statement, Apple’s offerings can feel a little safe and repetitive. There is nothing wrong with the existing designs, but they lack the sense of creativity, design flair, and excitement that could make the watch feel more personal or expressive.

Display Performance

The display is one of the standout features of the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple uses an advanced LTPO3 OLED panel that delivers a brighter and more efficient screen. Thinner bezels allow more viewing space without increasing the size of the watch case.

Another improvement is the enhanced always-on display refresh rate, which allows the seconds hand to move smoothly even when the watch is idle. This creates an experience closer to that of a traditional watch while maintaining the advantages of a smartwatch.

The display is also designed to remain easy to read in bright outdoor conditions and from different viewing angles, making it ideal for workouts and outdoor adventures.

One small annoyance is when you set the watch face to white but, after lowering your wrist, the display reverts back to black. I’m told this happens because black consumes less power, helping to extend battery life.

Battery Life

Battery life has always been a strong point for the Ultra series, and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 continues that trend. Apple claims the watch can last up to 42 hours during normal usage and up to 72 hours when using Low Power Mode. This is significantly longer than most standard Apple Watch models.

The watch also supports fast charging, allowing users to quickly add several hours of battery life with a short charging session. In real-world use, many users find the watch can comfortably last through a weekend with moderate activity, especially if power-intensive features are managed carefully.

Health and Fitness Tracking

Health and fitness tracking remain central to the Apple Watch experience, and the Ultra 3 expands these capabilities even further. The watch includes advanced sensors that monitor heart rate, activity levels, and sleep quality throughout the day.

One of the newer features is a system that can provide notifications related to potential signs of chronic high blood pressure. The improved sleep tracking system also introduces a sleep score, helping users better understand their sleep patterns and overall rest quality.

For athletes, the watch offers precise GPS tracking and supports a wide range of activities including running, cycling, diving, and hiking. Personally, I’m not sure I would wear it in bed every night, as I tend to like a break from technology when sleeping.

Connectivity and Smart Features

Connectivity is another area where the Apple Watch Ultra 3 excels. With built-in cellular support, users can make calls, send messages, and stream content even when their iPhone is not nearby. This makes the watch far more independent than earlier smartwatch models.

The watch also introduces satellite communication features designed for emergency situations when mobile networks or Wi-Fi are unavailable. This feature can be particularly valuable for hikers, climbers, and travellers exploring remote locations where connectivity is limited.

Limitations

Despite its impressive capabilities, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is not perfect. The large 49-mm case may feel oversized for some users, particularly those who prefer slimmer or more traditional watches. The premium price also makes it significantly more expensive than many other smartwatches.

Additionally, most of the upgrades in this generation are incremental rather than revolutionary. Users who already own the previous Ultra model may not find enough changes to justify upgrading.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is an impressive smartwatch that combines luxury design with powerful performance. It delivers excellent battery life, a bright and durable display, and advanced health and fitness tracking features that make it particularly appealing for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.

While the Black Titanium version looks bold and modern, my personal preference ultimately shifted toward the natural titanium model. In my view it looks classier, is likely to be more forgiving when it comes to everyday scratches, and its understated appearance makes it more suitable for formal settings while pairing more easily with a wider range of straps.

For users who want the most capable Apple Watch available and are comfortable with its larger size and premium price, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 stands out as one of the best smartwatches currently on the market.
